Despite my obviously generic use of ?Eskimo,? which is perhaps far too deeply rooted in the public domain of western readers, it is my true hope that the range of tales in this collection contributes to underscoring the remarkably idiosyncratic nature of northern cultures. ![]() Today, the word ?Inuit? designates indigenous peoples of the eastern Canadian arctic. ![]() He writes ?The word ?Eskimo? is decidedly in great and permanent disfavor among native peoples and is recognized as not paying respect to their historically based, vital sense of self-definition.
